Hear Her Story: Sarah Choo

Share

“The person who loves walking will walk further than the person who loves the destination.”

For Sarah, this quote epitomised her MLC experience. While serving as the Academic Prefect, her time at school was about more than just grades. It was about challenging herself, discovering her passions, and developing resilience and skills needed for the future.

Sarah chose an ATAR Pathway and appreciated the guidance from the Course Counsellors when selecting her subjects. With her love for both The Arts and Sciences, they encouraged her to take a well-rounded approach which allowed her to embrace both the creative and logical sides of her brain.

But Sarah wasn’t just a student in the classroom; she was also heavily involved in co-curricular activities, becoming a regular fixture in the Music Department throughout her six years at MLC. “I was in the Symphony Orchestra and participated in smaller ensembles such as Barbershop, Jazz Orchestra and Chamber Groups. I also had the opportunity to play in the Australian Combined Schools Music Festival as a piano accompanist.”

These co-curriculars weren’t just about honing her musical talents – they were about building meaningful connections and finding balance. “What I liked most about my co-curricular activities is that they were team-centric, so there was a social element and also the opportunity to work together and lift each other up.”

The emphasis on balance also led to some of Sarah’s most memorable moments at MLC, especially at the Year 12 Showcase. “It made me realise that these endeavours we pursue out of enjoyment, such as The Arts, are the things that we’ll truly remember in our high school journey, not the test marks.”

Looking towards the future, Sarah is confident that the holistic education she received at MLC has set her up to accomplish whatever she sets her mind to. “MLC has been vital in the role of developing me as an individual, growing me into the best version of myself and helping me find purpose in the world. My MLC experience has been a positive one, as I’ve found lifelong friends, incredible mentors and teachers, who’s advice and care will continue to resonate with me as I step out into the future.”

Sarah’s path is already unfolding, as she has received an offer from Curtin University for a Bachelor of Science (Actuarial Science) along with the prestigious Curtin Excellence Scholarship. Before commencing her degree though, Sarah will take a gap year where she looks forward to further exploring her passions. Reflecting on her high school years, she leaves one piece of advice for future students: “In your final years, it may seem like all your work is defined by a few exams or tasks but remember it is ultimately your love for learning new things that will set you up for the future.”
