Hear Her Story: Isabella Surtees

Share

When reflecting on her time at MLC, Bella recalls an imperative piece of advice that shaped the trajectory of her Senior Years: “Stay true to yourself and don’t compare your journey to others. Everyone’s path is different and it’s important to focus on your own goals and what makes you happy rather than following what others are doing.”

This advice, along with the incredible support of her teachers, gave Bella the confidence to change from an ATAR to General Pathway at the end of Year 11. “As Year 11 ended, I realised that the General Pathway would suit my strengths and future goals better. The ATAR system didn’t align with my personal learning style, and I recognised that a more hands-on practical approach would better prepare me for life after school.”

“My teachers helped me understand the differences between the ATAR and General Pathways, giving me the tools to make an informed decision. They never pressured me either way, but they encouraged me to follow what felt right for me and offered advice when needed.”

The General Pathway is designed for students wanting to pursue vocational based training so they can directly enter the workforce or who are looking for a different option to get into university. In Year 12, Bella studied Psychology, English ATAR, Dance, Drama, Careers & Enterprise, and a Certificate IV in Community Services, which led to her receiving an early offer to Curtin University to study Psychology.

“The General Pathway courses are engaging and allow you to develop skills that are immediately applicable in the workplace. With a strong focus on personal development, they also helped with both my critical thinking and creativity.”

Outside of the classroom, Bella was involved in numerous co-curricular activities including Dance and Drama Showcases, IGSSA sports and singing lessons. “These activities were a great way to develop my leadership and teamwork skills, while also pursuing my passions outside of academics.”

Looking back on the advice she was originally given; Bella encourages all future students to take the time to reflect on what they’re passionate about and what you want to do after school. She also says not to rush into decisions just because others are doing the same thing because when you follow your own path is when you find the most happiness.

“My MLC experience from Kindergarten to Year 12 was enriching and transformative. It helped me grow as a person. The school’s strong sense of community and focus on individual development allowed me to thrive and gain confidence in my abilities and will always be a place to call home.”
