ENGLISH TEACHER

I can hardly remember why I decided to become a teacher, as it was more than forty years ago, but I have always been interested in educating and inspiring young people. I have been fortunate to teach English, Literature and Drama in many different systems, overseas and interstate, in government schools, private schools, day schools, boarding schools, boys’ schools, girls’ schools and co-ed schools; I have been head of department, daily co-ordinator and deputy principal; I have edited school magazines, coached drama students and directed school productions!

I love teaching here in these beautiful surroundings in this vibrant, friendly place where everyone is respected, encouraged and valued. I value the collegiality and friendship of my colleagues, who are all so supportive and collaborative; and my students who are all caring, highly motivated and eager to accept challenges. It’s very rewarding to work in a College in which each student is supported, extended and empowered; and offered so many opportunities to develop her own skills and talents. The students here are truly amazing.

I’m passionate about sharing with my students my love of literature and inspiring them to love reading, writing and speaking. I thoroughly enjoy motivating the girls to develop a sincere love and appreciation of carefully crafted texts. I am delighted as they start to appreciate the immense skilfulness of authors, playwrights and poets, and use literary devices effectively in their own speaking and writing.

In my spare time I direct plays and act in them, and often they are plays taught at MLC. Recently I was awarded Western Australia’s Robert Finley Award for Best Director and Best Play for my production of August: Osage County.
