Hear Her Story: Nellie Lee

Nellie’s MLC journey began later than most. Joining the College in Year 10 as a boarder, she arrived not just at a new school, but in a new community – leaving behind her home, family and friends in Margaret River. “I was first motivated to look into MLC because a good friend from home was moving and encouraged me to check it out.” At first, she didn’t expect to make the move, but each visit strengthened her confidence. “Suddenly I was enrolled and so excited about it,” she recalls. Transitioning into a large school after coming from the Southwest could have been overwhelming, but finding her place in the Boarding House made all the difference.

“The boarding community played a huge role in shaping my experience at MLC both personally and academically.” Arriving in Year 10 meant adapting quickly, and boarding became the anchor that helped her settle. Living so close to school helped her feel part of the wider community, while the structure of boarding gave her stability and rhythm. “The supportive atmosphere encouraged good study habits and balance, which helped me stay motivated and engaged with day school.”

As she settled into MLC life, Nellie’s natural motivation and determination became clear. She chose the ATAR Pathway because it aligned with her long‑term goals. “I’ve always wanted to go to university, and the subjects I enjoyed most and was doing well in suited it best.” A strong interest in STEM shaped her studies, while her sporting commitments taught her valuable habits around organisation and focus. “The two often worked well together, helping me build skills like time management and discipline.” Surrounded by students working towards similar goals, she found encouragement. “It made such a difference, keeping me supported and motivated throughout ATAR.”

Sport soon became one of the most defining aspects of Nellie’s MLC experience. As a Sports Executive, she embraced every opportunity to contribute. “I loved being able to help out at different sporting events… and meet students from younger year groups.” Swimming held a particularly special place in her journey. “Swimming was always my favourite IGSSA sport… the girls and the coaches were just so amazing.” Serving as Swimming Captain was a highlight. “I loved supporting the team – from encouraging younger swimmers at training to cheering everyone on at the meet.”

Outside of school, underwater hockey has been one of Nellie’s greatest passions. “I got into underwater hockey because my parents both played… with my mum being a world champion and a big inspiration.” Competing nationally and internationally taught her perseverance and teamwork – and brought friendships she treasures. “By far the best part has been the people I’ve met – there are no better friends than ones you play sports with!”

Her interest in STEM was strengthened during her time at MLC. Receiving the ADF Future Innovators Award affirmed her ambition to pursue a future in science and engineering. “It gave me a lot of confidence that I’m on the right path.” Completing a fitness certificate added practical skills. “It not only gave me fitness knowledge to use in my own life, but also the qualifications to work in a gym.”

Reflecting on her years at the College, Nellie says her most defining moments came from boarding and co‑curricular life. “Getting involved in sport and other activities really added to every day… while boarding gave me the chance to meet so many different people and build so many important friendships.” Joining MLC later meant she had to adapt quickly – and she did so with independence, organisation and openness.

Nellie has now commenced a double degree in Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Science at the University of Western Australia, living at St Catherine’s Residential College. She will continue playing underwater hockey, with hopes to compete at the world championships in Turkey. Her advice for younger students reflects her journey: “Balance really is so important… enjoy it – the time goes so quickly, and some of the best moments come from just being involved.”
