History of Rowing at MLC
Rowing at MLC began in 1984, when 5 determined students – Danielle Hemery (Class of 1985), Lynette Langmead (Class of 1985), Susan Lang (Class of 1985) Fiona Meiklejohon (Class of 1985) and Nicky Amesz (Class of 1985) – decided to take up the sport, supported by their parents. With limited resources and little initial backing, the girls trained using borrowed boats on the Swan River and persisted despite significant challenges.
Although rowing was not formally supported by the College at the time, the group continued to compete in MLC colours with assistance from WAIS and the UWA Rowing Club. Their perseverance paid off in 1985 when they claimed victory in the Petite Final at the State Schoolgirls’ Championship, laying the foundation for rowing at MLC.
