Girls relay for cancer research
Monday, 11 May 2015
There were a few bleary-eyed Year 11 girls on Monday morning after a weekend of raising money for the Cancer Council of WA at the Relay for Life.
Some walked gingerly to class after their blistered feet carried them for a combined total of 4,600 laps of the WA Athletics Stadium, or 1,840 kilometres.
The three MLC teams were bolstered by a visit from Principal Rebecca Cody who brought cupcakes to sweeten the 24-hour relay.
For Boarder Cris Pang, from China, it was an opportunity to experience fundraising Australian-style.
"As an international student, I am always interested in what the local students do and how they feel about fundraising events," Cris said.
"I think it's good to do things instead of just giving money. It's a really personal way to give."
MLC won the Best Sun Smart School award, and the girls raised $5,427 for cancer research.
The girls were supported at the weekend by their staff captains, Donna Kolka, Jen McGillivray and Amanda Robertson.
Mrs McGillivray said the girls returned safe and sound.
The Perth Relay for Life is an annual event which has raised more than $8 million since its inception in 2001.
