MLC Music Maker for a Day

Thursday 28 January 2021 | 9am–4pm

MLC Music Maker for a Day is a free holiday programme for aspiring young musicians in Years 4–9 (in 2021). Open to girls not presently attending the College, the day will provide inspirational glimpses of our outstanding music programme through fun participation in a wide range of music making activities.

Girls starting at MLC in 2021 are very welcome to attend. Those auditioning in 2021 for Music Scholarships are particularly encouraged to apply.

Participants will explore music from around the globe playing Balinese gamelan, West African drums and Chinese guzheng. They will take part in a vocal workshop with our award-winning director of MLC Barbershop, Ms Carole Macintyre, and a short speed composition/ improvisation session lead by Jazz musician Ms Gemma Farrell.

Girls are invited to prepare a performance piece for a repertoire class with one of the College’s outstanding instrumental tutors. Even if girls don’t wish to perform formally, they are encouraged to bring their own instruments with them for other sessions. The day concludes with an open repertoire class and forum for students and their parents where MLC Director of Music, Dr Robert Faulkner (author of Music in Our Lives, Oxford University Press) will discuss musical development, practice, motivation, and talk about the wide range of opportunities for music makers at Methodist Ladies’ College.

He will also answer questions about Scholarship and Prize opportunities at MLC. Scholarship applications close on 7 February 2021. Find out more about MLC Scholarships here.
