A Toast to the Centenary
A small but enthusiastic group of NSW-based Collegians met on a balmy evening in November to swap stories of MLC days and drink a toast - or two - to the school. Our group included representatives from every House (Sparta won - hoorah!) and five decades from the 60s to the 00s. Although hairstyles and clothes differed from decade to decade, so many of our memories were familiar - trips to Rottnest, glamorous young couples at school dances, groups of girls lounging on the lawn and around the swimming pool - and, of course, the uniform! It was fun to find out how the uniform had changed over the years, to exchange gossip about our teachers ("don't tell me she's still there!!") and to track the connections between successive generations of MLC girls as we discovered we were at school with each other's sisters, cousins, aunts and nieces.
After a great beginning, the NSW Collegians plan to meet regularly to strengthen our new friendships. We welcome all NSW-based Collegians to join us for our next event - watch this website for details.

MLC Centenary Cocktail A highlight of our evening was the debut of the MLC Centenary Cocktail and it is our pleasure to share the recipe: 1. Heat 1 cup of Midori liquor until almost boiling (be careful - I managed to set it alight). Dissolve 1 tablespoon of gelatine in the hot mixture, pour into a shallow rectangular dish and refrigerate until set. 2. Cut the Midori jelly into small cubes. 3. Place 1 or 2 cubes of jelly in the bottom of a champagne flute. Top with champagne. Voila - green and gold. After a glass or two, we were ready to sing the School Song… some of the words were a bit shaky, but we all managed a rousing chorus of "Up School, On School!". |

Adelaide Luncheon
Memories of Houses, hats, gloves, stockings, uniforms, teachers, Headmasters and Headmistresses, classrooms, music rooms, libraries, offices and hallways all came flooding back when 11 Adelaide-based Collegians met on 28 October for a longish lunch.
While we braved terrible weather to attend, it was well worth the effort as all attendees enjoyed a cheerful and enthusiastic meeting of old scholars ranging in age from their 30s to their 80s!
Stories of school and our lives soon unfolded. While introducing ourselves to the group, we discovered a mix of boarders, day girls and Barclay House girls who are also mothers, grandmothers, widows, carers, sisters, professional and retired women.
Efforts to peruse yearbooks and an old school hymn book proved difficult as there was so much talking to be done! We shared memorabilia that started another flood of reminiscences and discovered new or lost connections with each other and the community.
We remembered participating in or attending various lessons, sports, music, debating, Chapel, churches, camps and all sorts of school activities and festivals. We discussed friends, compared and contrasted our school experiences and spoke of our mothers, sisters and families. Buses, beaches, the river, buildings (new and old), events, boys and brothers also featured - it was just like chatting at school!!
We are proud to have attended MLC, and we think MLC can be proud of us! While an Adelaide MLC Old Collegians' visitors' book was started, we also shared our contact details.
