The MLC Archives

The Methodist Ladies' College Archives was officially established in 1992.

A memorabilia collection had already been accumulated and catalogued by a group of enthusiastic and interested Collegians' during the 1980s. They demonstrated the value they placed on their time at MLC by setting out to capture the history of the College. Their commitment to the task is evident in the valuable collection of photographs, publications, uniform items and various memorabilia which forms the basis of the current collection.

The collection makes it possible to trace the development of ideas, changes in practice, structure and the organisation at MLC by providing information about the people, context and history behind the organisation.

The Archive Collection is a valuable resource for students with a range of primary and documentary material. The students respond enthusiastically to historical material which is relevant to their own experience. It provides the opportunity for them to see themselves as part of a long tradition, to see the contributions and achievements of previous MLC students and to understand and appreciate the traditions and values which have developed over time.

Archival displays which illustrate aspects of the College history, important events and themes are regularly mounted around the school and in classrooms as well as on occasions such as Collegian Reunions, Open Days, and Support Group functions.

The College is indebted to the Collegians and other members of the school community who have donated items over the years. The memories of past students are also an invaluable resource and to ensure that these are captured Collegians are encouraged to write down their memories.

A booklet called My MLC School Days has been produced to facilitate this. It is available from the Archives Department.

Donations of items which document the life of the College are keenly sought and all donations are documented, acknowledged and appropriately stored to ensure preservation.
